5 Questions for Beautycounter Consultant, Jenny Mohns
1. How did you find out about Beautycounter and what motivated you to join their team of consultants?
I first heard about Beautycounter when I was reading an article in GOOP and the products and reviews caught my attention. Shortly after I reached out to my friend whom I learned had been working for BC for a year. She came over to my house and talked to me about the mission of the company, explained the amazing benefits of being part of the BC team, and the she let me trial the products for a couple of days- needless to say, I fell in LOVE. The mission of BC is to get safe products into the hands of everyone, which I think is really important.
2. Is this a side gig for you? How do you balance having two jobs?
Yes, being part of Beautycounter is a side job for me. My full time job is as a physical therapist, working 45 hours per week. At first I just thought Beautycounter would be fun to host social cocktail events with my friends and teach them about the products, but then I also jumped into the company as fast as I could when I learned that I could benefit in many ways myself, like by getting my favorite products for 25-50% off! I would estimate that I spend about 3-4 hours per week on Beautycounter promoting the brand mission as well as my own personal webpage (which they help you set up when you join). Already in the two months that I have been with BC I have already created a substantial savings account, which is amazing. It has been very easy to balance both jobs, and honestly, being part of the BC team does not even feel like work to me.
3. What has been the most rewarding aspect about being part of the Beautycounter team so far?
I would have to say that getting the chance to educate women (and some men!) about the importance of their health and the products they choose to put on their bodies has been overwhelmingly rewarding. Even at the end of the day if no one makes a purchase I am okay with that. My goal and passion is to teach everyone to be more conscious of their health. The statistic that has hit home the most for me is, “The United States has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.” It is scary to think of all the chemicals we put on our face in a day and what it doing to our skin and immune system.
4. We love The Never List (Beautycounter's comprehensive list of banned chemicals, aka the ones you should always avoid). In your opinion, if someone were to ask you where should they start on their safe beauty journey, what would you say?
Start with Skin Deep! This app/website is amazing at demonstrating the difference between safe and unsafe products. You simply scan the barcode of a product and the app can tell you whether or not the product is safe. I was shocked to see that the Nars blush that I have been using for years was rated a 7/10! That's when you really start to see the difference between safe and un-safe products. For instance, all of my Beautycounter products are rated 0-1/10. I suggest going through your current products and tossing those that are high numbers in Skin Deep. Of course I'd also encourage you to read more about BC, check out The Never List and trial a product or two.
5. Lastly, what's your must-have product from Beautycounter?
I have two favorite products! The #2 Lustro face oil and the Tint Skin Complexion Coverage. Both have been raved about from the Victoria's Secret Angels and Lauren Conrad.
The blush and lipsticks are also very popular.
