Why and How to Become a Mentor with the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston
There literally isn’t enough space to list all the reasons we love the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston. With a mission to provide girls in the Boston area with committed mentors to spend time with each other, whether in an academic setting or not, is something we strongly support.
Meet The Big Sister Association of Greater Boston
Beginning in 1951, three women in Boston decided the girls in their communities could greatly benefit from a one-on-one mentorship program with an older woman in the same community. With this idea, the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston was born. From there, the association has grown and now matches over 2,700 girls with Big Sisters each year. In 2015, the agency was awarded the National Agency of the Year by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
How It Works
The Big Sister Association of Greater Boston works with girls ages 7-20 through various mentorship programs and activities to foster healthy decision-making, wellness practices, and career exploration. Working both on-site at local community centers and schools, and individually within the city, each mentoring program offers an accessible solution and guidance to the Little Sisters.
The most popular program pairs Big Sisters (mentors) with Little Sisters (mentees) to meet twice a month to hang out and spend quality time with each other around the city. But what about the Little Sisters that are busy on the weekends? The association also has programs within local community schools for girls to receive academic support and participate in recreational activities after school.
