Wall Art for a Hygge Bedroom

2020 has tried us in ways we never would have expected. We’re spending an unprecedented amount of time at home and are trying to be especially mindful of our mental health and wellbeing. And now, as we head into Winter, we want, more than ever, to make sure that our home space is serene and tranquil. This is why we’re now in pursuit of fostering “hygge” in the space where we spend the largest percentage of our time: the bedroom!

Hygge

Hygge is a Danish word expressing the concept of coziness, contentment, calm, and comfortable. There’s no direct translation, so the word has been embraced globally, especially in the world of home decor. Denmark is known both for having an incredibly long, dark, and cold winter and also for having the happiest people in the world, so it’s no wonder that people elsewhere are eager to embrace hygge vibes as a way of promoting wellness at home to get through some of the toughest months of the year.

One of the easiest and fun ways to refresh a bedroom and bring in some hygge is to add some soothing wall decor!

I decided to go for it.

When giving my room a quick makeover, I wanted to look for framed posters with the following attributes:

  • Blue - blue is great for the bedroom because it is tranquil. I had also previously purchased a pair of table lamps with french blue shades that I thought might be nice to complement elsewhere in the space.

  • Clean lines - it was really important to me to seek designs that were fairly simple in order to help minimize any sense of clutter. My bedroom is where I go to calm my mind—to meditate, read, and sleep—so I wanted the wall decor to reflect this.

  • Nature - Since I live in a city, I find that having elements of nature is particularly important to my wellbeing. Abstract nature-inspired designs can help bring the mind to the place of “calm and cozy” by counteracting the hustle and bustle of city life.

Before & After

My apartment has plain, cream-colored walls. In 2019, this was fine — we were hardly ever home! We were traveling or out late in evenings, and just used our room as a place to rest our heads after a long day out in the world. But, this is 2020. My bedroom has become the place where I meditate on my lunchbreak while working remotely. It is where I read for hours during long weekends in quarantine. And yes, it’s where I watch Netflix on my laptop when my partner is watching football in our living room. So, when deciding to refresh this room, I wanted to use art as a way to draw the eye up and spark feelings of peace, and hopefully distract from our un-ironed duvet (I’m just never going to be the kind of homemaker that irons sheets and bedding…like who has the time, honestly!).

I was absolutely thrilled when I found the Blue Graphic Petals print, Blue Graphic Flowers print, A Big Blue Sky print, and the smaller Blue Coral print on Desenio. The designs reminded me of Matisse, who is one of my favorite artists. Plus, what’s more peaceful than clouds and flowers?! Desenio made ordering each of these prints with the appropriate frames super easy, and when they arrived, the assembly and framing process was absolutely foolproof. So, I added them to the wall with the help of a few command hooks and my iphone level. The posters plus a quick tidying session gave the whole room a put-together look and captured that feeling of hygge I wanted.
