With things slowly but surely re-opening as more and more people are getting vaccinated, it may be time to take stock of what parts of your life you want to bring back to the in-person realm and which are more convenient to keep remote. We know that many folks are planning to continue working remotely long after the pandemic ends, but what about your wellness practices like the gym or therapy?

Below we’re exploring some of the differences between in-person and remote counseling options. It is so essential to take care of your mental health, so regardless of whether you choose remote or in-person, therapy is a great way to prioritize your wellbeing.

Why Remote Therapy Is Great

  • The Barrier to Entry is Low - if you’ve never tried therapy before, finding a vitual option and booking an appointment is super easy. There are tons of options, many of which are covered by insurance.

  • Reduce Your Nerves - With virtual counseling, you literally get to stay in your comfort zone. Wear your pajamas and plop on your own cozy couch. This may help if you’re going to be covering topics that usually make you uncomfortable. This may be a great way to get started with a sex therapist or work through a deep depression where you’re having trouble leaving your home space.

  • Time Efficient - No need to drive, deal with train schedules, or worry about parking! Virtual counseling is also a great, convenient option for couples that might be managing different schedules.

Why In-Person Therapy is Also Great

  • Deeper Relationships - Meeting with someone regularly in-person inevitably means you’ll build a repertoire more quickly. We’re not saying that you can’t build a great relationship with a therapist virtually, but still, there’s something to be said for picking up those non-verbal cues and making that in-person connection.

  • Set the Scene - Sometimes it’s helpful to be in a neutral space when talking about difficult subjects. That way, when you physically leave your appointment, you can take your learnings and reflections away with you and apply them as needed. Your travel time also gives you a few moments to decompress — rather than immediately jumping into the next thing you need to do at home.

At the end of the day, there’s no wrong answer. Why not try both options and see which you prefer!
